As I head into my 8th year providing quality care and companion services to seniors, the passion and commitment I began with is stronger than ever!
Ironically, I started caring for my own father at the same time I launched my home care business. My father passed away at the age of 86 in June of 2017 from Alzheimer’s disease. Our time together was wonderful, sometimes very frustrating (more so for him than me), and at other times exhausting and quite sad.
Watching someone you love slip away while dementia takes hold is cruel experience which no family should endure. I never want Alzheimer’s to define my father. His family was everything to him, so we chose to remember and miss the wonderful man he was before he started to disappear.
These years helping my own parents have made me realize what many families are going through. I witnessed my mother trying to adjust to so many changes within a short period of time as she was losing her husband of 65 years. This has reaffirmed what I know: Families need support during this difficult and challenging time in their lives.
As my business grows, I always try to remind myself and ask my team to consider this: “These individuals are doing the best they can. Look beyond what their bodies and minds have become, and see who they still are inside. Keep them safe and try to bring them joy during every visit”.
